The Motor Dealers’ Association of Alberta (MDA) recently announced the 2010 winners of its highest honour – the Alberta Dealer of Excellence award. The award is given to two dealers annually – one in the metro category and one in the non-metro category.

This year’s winner in the metro category is Rick Romeril of Calgary, president of the Romeril Auto Group (CMP Automotive Ltd., Shaw GMC Pontiac Buick Hummer Inc. & Sunridge Nissan Inc.).

The winner in the non-metro category is Ken Zender, owner of Zender Ford Sales Ltd., Spruce Grove, and Western Sterling Trucks Ltd., Edmonton.

Both Zender and Romeril operate successful dealerships and serve on many community and industry organizations, says Denis Ducharme, MDA president. “Ken and Rick have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their customers, staff, association and community. They are fine examples of the many excellent auto dealers we are fortunate to have as members.”

It has been a challenging couple of years for the auto industry, but changes, both positive and negative are what make being an auto dealer so exciting for Romeril. “The vehicles, the ups and the downs, it’s what has made this such a fun and rewarding career,” he says.

Romeril, along with the rest of Alberta’s auto dealers is “foreseeing good growth for this year. Consumers are more confident in their jobs and manufacturers are more stable, he says.”

Zender concurs with Romeril’s love of the business. “It’s a very gratifying career,” he says. “The industry has given me a great life – exciting, evolving, and new cars every year!”

The MDA awards the Dealer of Excellence annually to one metro dealer from Calgary or Edmonton and one non-metro winner from the rest of the province. This practice is a reflection of the unique challenges and accomplishments of dealers in different marketplaces.

The award criteria are:

  • Business Acumen
  • Community Involvement
  • Association/Industry Involvement

The award candidates are nominated by their peers and the applications are examined by a panel of past award recipients.

Factors such as customer satisfaction, ethics, the attitude and competence of the dealership’s staff, the dealer's leadership in association issues and service to civic, political and educational activities are all carefully considered before making the final selection.
