Smaller, lighter and more fuel-efficient cars are grabbing the spotlight this year at the 90th Vancouver International Auto Show but there are plenty of other new cars to be seen with their own brand of sizzle.
“The focus continues to grow on green technologies,” says president and CEO, Blair Qualey of the New Car Dealers Association of B.C., the sponsoring body for the show. This year’s show, which runs from March 30 through April 4 at BC Place Stadium, is expected to offer an Electric Ave., where those attending can see the latest in electric or hybrid vehicles. “We are working with BC Hydro which is also exhibiting there,” he says, adding that the interest in electric vehicles is steadily expanding and is reflected in the show each year.
The 2010 show will also feature a charity benefit evening with proceeds going to Special Olympics BC. The 2010 Vancouver International Auto Show will also be the first Canadian consumer show to run a large-scale lottery with the unveiling of its Dream Car Lottery, where a lucky ticket buyer can win a 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. The Special Olympics BC, which has been supported by the New Car Dealers Association of BC for more than 26 years, will receive (from a portion of the lottery ticket sales) a specially equipped vehicle to assist with ongoing work to meet the needs and interests of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
In total there will be a contingency of 450 new models on display as well as new motorcycles. “We will have the best of the world manufacturers at this years show,” Qualey says.
Here’s a rundown of the top 10 models on exhibit:
1. The 2011 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (Prius PHV): A green car styled for the city with the ability to reach highway speeds on battery power alone, the Toyota Prius takes zero-emissions driving to the next level. Its hybrid gasoline electric power-train transmission allows the PHV to travel where purely electric vehicles cannot.
